Grammy winner and Hall-of-Fame performer Billy Joel showed his many faces Tuesday night as he answered questions for a sold-out crowd at the Jorgensen center for the Performing Arts.
After a brief introduction, Joel took to the stage and was met with a standing ovation from a crowd of all ages that was screaming and waving copies of his records.
"I apologize if any of you thought this was a concert," Joel joked. "That's not even a real piano." Dressed in head-to-toe black, he dove right into audience questions with his refreshingly funny sarcasm.
He advised parents on how to support their budding musician children and reiterated that the best way to advance in the music world is to take any job that comes along. "It's not about the money," he said, "it had to be about the love of the music."
A Long Island native, Joel infused self-deprecation to show that anybody can make it big if they work hard enough. "Look at me, do I look like a rock star? No, I look like a guy who makes pizza," he said.
Joel went on to describe the inspiration behind several pieces, as well as the motivation from choreographer Twyla Tharp to turn his songs into the hit musical, "Movin' Out." Every time an audience member referenced a favorite song, Joel sat down at his piano and sang it, earning roars of applause with each soulful note.
It didn't take much longer for 7th-semester journalism and English major Danielle Ennis to shake up the theater as Joel summoned her to the stage to perform her "go-to" karaoke song, "Only the Good Die Young."
"I've listened to that song for 15 years, but I can say I never would have predicted this," Ennis said of her chance to sing alongside Joel. "It was surreal. It really was one of the greatest moments of my life."
Two other fans followed suit throughout the night, taking the stage with Joel and singing karaoke-like versions of their favorite songs. Any audience member that asked won a hug from Joel, who humbly answered their requests with a dose of wit. Though, alongside the humor, Joel was able to show how serious he was about his career.
"Sometimes your limitations become your greatest gifts," he said. "I just don't believe too much in sugar and sweetness, there's always a knife in it, and that's what makes it real."
The glow of cameras and smartphone recorders illuminated the audience as Joel took to the piano to play his favorite song of the moment, "Baby Grand," written for Ray Charles. He turned off the "funny man" for the ballad, but turned up the soul and was met with yet another roaring applause.
From "New York State of Mind" to "Piano Man," Joel served his loyal audience and humbly accepted a second standing ovation when he exited the stage for the evening.
"It was definitely the best performance I've seen because it's very intimate," said 7th-semester marketing major Nick Stevens. A four-year Jorgensen employee, Stevens said this was his favorite because of Joel's close interaction with the audience.
Seventh-semester allied health major and SUBOG social media and communications chair Sarah Lauretti has seen her fair share of SUBOG shows, but claimed "this was easily the best."
"Having him perform the songs I've listened to since I was five was mind-blowing," she said.
SUBOG next welcomes comedian Jay Montepare on December 1 in the Student Union Theater.

Female Orgasm

Ready for the best orgasm ever? Sex educators Marshall Miller and Dorian Solot came to UConn last week  for their annual Female Orgasm presentation. As always, the two hour long lecture was hilariously funny as well as very informative. Marshall and Dorian have really mastered the art of addressing much needed information that some college students might find hard to come by with a light and judgement-free environment. Rest assured that all your orgasm questions were answered and hopefully this won't be the last time UConn's gets to host the Big O.

Sammy Adams Concert 9/17/2011

Sam Adams getting the crowd going
Sammy Adams
Today in South Campus Quad The Concert for Causes was held by our own SUBOG concert committee. Our own Dj Manni opened for Sammy Adams, he got the crowd going with his electro style music and he pumped up the crowd while everyone was waiting in anticipation for Sam Adams! Finally when Sam Adams came out onto the stage he gave a phenomenal performance!!! Not only did he praise us for our amazing basketball team, he even got the crowd going with one of our UCONN chants! He performed brand new songs and even favorites such as "I hate college". Sophomore Cate Reid stated, " I love Sammy Adams! He is adorable and I love all his songs!" Both artists did a great job for such an important cause. It was truly a great show.

Vijay Sekhara

Hi! I am a senior Chemical Engineering major with a minor in chemistry and materials engineering. I am the Vice President of Policy for the second year in a row and have been a member of SUBOG for three years. I was also USG senator my Junior year. I love all 90's alternative rock music and my favorite foods are anything in the grain group like pasta and bread. My favorite campus events have to be attending the football games and purple is my favorite color.

Ben Spiegel

Hi! I am a senior Communications major and this years Concert Chair. I love baked mac and cheese and my most recent concert I attended was BOB and my favorite on campus event would have to be watching the championship game in Gampel with everyone last semester. My most embarrassing moment at UConn was when I was working at the Ludacris concert. I had to carry around a bunch of keys on my belt and my pants ended up falling down.

Sarah Lauretti

Hi everyone! I am senior Allied Health major, a psychology minor and this years Social Media and Communications chair! I have been a member of SUBOG for 3 years and have loved every second of it. I love listening to Rascal Flatts and Michael Buble' and my favorite food is anything containing pasta. My most embarassing moment at UConn had to be when I fell down the flight of stairs leading down from D-lot after a snow storm last year. My favorite oncampus event that I have attended is a tie between the Women's Basketball games and seeing Gabriel Iglesias perform!

Rohan Saxena

Hi Everyone, I'm Rohan Saxena and am a senior majoring in Finance.  I have been part of SUBOG since my freshman year; I have been the Marketing Chair Sophomore year and have been the Vice President for Outreach for the past two years.  As V.P. for Outreach, I lead the Promotions, Recruitment and Retention, and Social Media Committees.  I love watching cartoons and am a huge fan of Dragonball Z (Goku).  I enjoy being greatly involved at UConn and highly recommend everyone to do the same.  Besides SUBOG, I'm in Zeta Beta Tau, RHA, and have worked with orientation.  I like to listen to all kinds of music, not one in particular.  My most embarrassing moment at UConn is when I made a fool of myself at a SUBOG comedy show...

Markie Theophile

I am a Psychology major and this years Daytime Chair. I do not like saying I have favorites, but I really enjoy listening to Barcelona and Kings of Leon. I had a chimichunga for the first time this summer and I think they are awesome. I don't have embarrassing moments cause I'm awesome!

Kelsey Brown

I am this year's Vice President for Programming.  I am an English Major in my senior year of college and my favorite food is pizza.  I like a lot of different music, but someone I can listen to all day long is Brandi Carlile.  My most embarrassing UConn moment is on the first day of classes this semester, I sat in Arjona, when I was supposed to be in Monteith. It was five minutes before I realized I was in the wrong class and had to try to nonchalantly leave. My favorite on-campus activity that I have attended is the SUBOG movies. I love watching movies and seeing them for cheaper than regular theatres is awesome!

James Albert

I am a 5th semester economics major and will be the Sports Promotion Chairman for the 2011-2012 school year.  I am a huge music fan but with that being said I do not have a particular favorite.  I am currently enjoying the House/Techno/Electronic trend.  My favorite food would have to be anything Italian, particularly pizza.  I do embarrassing things probably more often than not, but I think it just makes everything more fun.  One of my favorite campus activities was last year's awesome Ludacris concert at Jorgensen.

Devin Smith

I am SUBOG's Major Weekends Chair! I am a Senior majoring in Communication Disorders with a minor in French and Psychology. My favorite musician is John Mayer and my favorite food is ice cream :) My favorite on campus activity is a time between Homecoming and One Ton Sundae! My most embarrassing moment, out of many at UConn, would have to be crying out of happiness in Gampel right after winning the National Championship last year. A reporter happened to be right there to interview me while sobbing, and the next day online in an article about the game, everyone in the world knew "Devin Smith, 20, shed tears." What can I say, I just love being a Husky!

John Shevchuk

I am this years Marketing and Promotions chair. I am a fifth
semester Management Information Systems major. I enjoy anything outdoors
from hiking to biking and I love to travel. Winter is just as fun for me
as summer as I spend a lot of time on the ski slopes and I can never get
enough snow. I am a huge music fan of all genres, and have something
playing at all times. My most memorable UConn moment was rushing the floor
in Gampel two years ago when our basketball team upset the then number one
seeded Texas.

I am a lover of all things musical! I am a big fan of many bands but my favorite definetly has to be the John Mayer Trio!! I also love tomatoes!! In my short time at UConn I have had many many emberassing moments here. The worst though has to be my almost fatal trip in the middle of Fairfield Way! My foot found the only patch of ice on campus that wasn't melted and bam! down I went. I played it off good though, only about half of the school saw. Haha :)

currently the Vice President for Finance and Administration. My favorite
band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and my favorite food is Chicken

my favorite moment at the Storrs Campus would have to be the Men's
basketball victory over Butler in the 2011 NCAA Championship Game.

Liz Carroll

My name is Liz Carroll and I'm from Hamden, CT. I am a senior at Uconn
studying Secondary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I have
been a board member on SUBOG for two years now, this year I am the special
event chair and last year I was the lecture chair. I am a huge country
music fan (it's all I listen to)! I love my family and would do anything
for them. My favorite food has got to be anyhog that my mom cooks. When
I'm at school some things I like to do are go to football games, go out

The best event that I have attended was Southapalooza last year. Between Oozeball and classic 90's Family Double Dare their is something for everyone. The most embarrassing moment that I have had at UConn was a complete fail. I completely wiped out, back first,  into a mud pile while trying to jump over a puddle. Take it from me wet grass and sneakers don't mix. So that's a little about me if you want to find out more stop by the SUBOG office and come to a comedy meeting Wednesdays at 4:00 P.M.
